THE FACTS ABOUT Cataract Surgery
Background
Cataracts are the number one cause of poor vision in the United States. Unfortunately, even after cataract surgery, patients still frequently need to wear eyeglasses to perform regular activities.

Now, physicians are turning to a new technique that eliminates the need to wear eyeglasses after cataract surgery. Expected to be approved by the FDA in early 2007, this innovative procedure involves many intricate eye measurements – and the implantation of a new kind of intraocular lens called AcrySof® ReSTOR®.
The new lens uses a combination of three complementary technologies: 1) apodization; 2) diffraction; and 3) refraction. Together, these technologies have allowed patients to experience a full range of high-quality vision after cataract surgery.
“Many years ago, following cataract surgery, it was necessary for patients to wear thick lenses on their glasses to correct their vision,” says Thomas Biggs, DO and SJMO opthamologist. “More recently, however, many patients are having lenses implanted to correct distance vision. Still, they usually need to use reading glasses or bifocals for near vision after surgery.”
The procedure is the result of seventeen years of research and early one half billion dollars. It costs about the same as Lasik surgery.
“This is a breakthrough procedure, especially important for our aging population,” says Biggs, MD, one of only a handful of physicians in the nation/area qualified to perform the procedure. “It’s as revolutionary as Lasik was a few years ago. The vast majority of patients are very happy with their new vision. More than 20,000 patients have had the procedure.”
