THE FACTS ABOUT Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Background

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in men where noncancerous normal cells grow and result in an enlarged prostate. This is a normal part of aging as cells in the prostate begin to grow more rapidly after the age of 40. This change in growth can lead to BPH.

BPH is often characterized by pain or difficulties during urination.Such difficulties include: leaking or dribbling after urination, sudden urgency to urinate, weak urination stream, hesitant, delayed or interrupted start of urine stream, increased urination, incomplete emptying of bladder, and or incontinence.

“It’s important to contact your physician if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms,” says Michael Cotant, MD, an SJMO urologist. “BPH does not cause prostate cancer, but the two share many of the same symptoms, so it is important to be properly diagnosed.”

The following tests may be used to diagnose BPH: digital rectal exam, prostate specific antigen blood test, transrectal ultrasound, cystoscopy, and urine flow rate.

TREATMENTS
BPH may be treated with medications, minimally invasive therapies, surgery, or in some cases, lifestyle modifications.

Minimally invasive therapies allow patients to return to their daily routines quicker than do traditional surgeries. While there are a variety of minimally invasive treatments available, they are all designed to destroy or remove excess prostate tissue. This reduces the size of the prostate and relieves the pressure on the urethra.

CAUTIONS
Problems with urination may also indicate other conditions such as prostatitis, prostate cancer, urinary tract infection, urinary incontinence or kidney disease.
