THE FACTS ABOUT MINIMALLY INVASIVE HERNIA REPAIR

Background

Most common in the abdominal wall, a hernia is a bulge of tissue
caused by a weak area or tear in the muscle through which tissue
protrudes. Organs, such as the intestine, can then push through the
weakened muscle causing a hernia. This can cause pain, discomfort
and a noticeable bulge under the skin. If the intestine gets caught
in the hernia and loses its blood supply it can be a serious health
risk to you. Symptoms tend to get worse by lifting heavy objects of
over exertion during activities ranging from sports to gardening.

Symptoms of a hernia include pain or discomfort and a localized
swelling somewhere on the surface of the abdomen or in the
groin area.

Hernias are classified by their location on the abdominal wall.
They are grouped into four categories: Inguinal, Umbilical, Ventral
and Hiatal.

“If you think that you may have a hernia, talk to your primary
care physician about treatment options,” says Malik McKany, MD,
and SJMO surgeon. “Your physician will discuss your lifestyle and
develop a treatment plan that works best for you.”

ADVANTAGES
There are several ways to repair a hernia including suturing, mesh,
open repair and laparoscopic repair.

Mesh is a prosthetic material that is used to repair hernias. This
mesh acts like a fence to reduce tension on the wound and
prevent recurrence. The mesh is inserted through the incision in
the abdomen, or the groin, and sutured into position. Additionally,
the mesh is most absorbable and the procedure can be completed
under local anesthesia.

This technique can be accomplished using both open and
laparoscopic repairs.

CAUTIONS
As with any surgery, there is the risk of blood loss and or infection.
Additionally, each technique of hernia repair has its own unique
benefits and indications and it is important to have several options
when deciding which type of repair is ideal for your hernia.
