THE FACTS ABOUT Now at St. Joe, Single-incision surgery offers fast recovery

Background

Single-port surgery is performed literally through one entry point, a small incision in the abdomen. Single-port surgery is typically done around the navel area, while the patient is under general anesthesia. A laparoscope is inserted through the opening, giving the surgeon a high-definition image of the body’s internal organs.

With all of the instruments using the same entry port, single-port, single-incision surgery can prove more effective for the patient.

“Our area of expertise using single-incision surgery includes abdominal surgery, such as hiatal hernia, gallbladder, bowel resection removal and colon rectal surgery,” says Malik McKany, MD, SJMO general surgeon and Director of the SJMO Hernia Clinic. “We have experienced exceptional results using this least invasive approach.”

Best of all, single-incision surgery improves our patients’ clinical outcomes. As the least invasive of all the advanced surgery options, single-incision surgery offers the following benefits to our patients:

  • Reduced trauma to the body
  • Limited blood loss and pain
  • Decreased risk of infection
  • Little to no scarring
  • Shorter, if any, hospital stay
  • Faster recovery

Of special note is the significant reduction of related complications, especially for abdominal surgery. Because there is a single port and a single incision, there is little to no scarring and a decrease in complications that can commonly occur after traditional open and even traditional laparoscopic abdominal surgery. Patients report less discomfort and quicker recovery compared to those undergoing traditional laparoscopy.
