THE FACTS ABOUT ICD and Testing

Background

An irregular heartbeat is a major cause of death following a heart attack. Today, cardiac surgeons are turning to an innovative new implantable heart monitor that automatically signals a doctor if a patient’s heart beats abnormally. It’s called an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD).Implanted in the chest, the small electronic device shocks the heart back into a healthy rhythm if it detects an abnormal heartbeat. The notification signal is automatically generated via wireless satellite transmission, even if the patient is unaware of any problems. In addition, a home monitoring system sends a beat-by-beat record(similar to an electrocardiogram) of any heart rhythm abnormality to the doctor instantaneously.

ADVANTAGES

Doctors can program an ICD to send an alert for specific reasons, such as a significant increase in the number of irregular heartbeats(arrhythmia), as well as the preferred alert method (i.e., via email, cell phone, fax or page).“This technology provides patients with a superior level of care and safety,” says Russell T. Steinman, MD. “It allows physicians to better evaluate and manage a patient’s condition without relying on telephone calls and additional office visit follow-ups. It may also help to reduce emergency room visits. With this system, weknow precisely when to see patients in order to best manage their cardiac care.”Because heart muscle pumping action can be poor as a result of a heart attack, it is important to monitor heart activity. Now it can be done 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
