THE FACTS ABOUT Hypertension

Background

An estimated 30-40% of adults in the world suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure). Patients with uncontrolled hypertension face a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Both are leading causes of death among Americans. Because of these risks, the disease is treated aggressively with lifestyle changes and prescription medication. Unfortunately, in half of treated patients these steps alone are not enough to control blood pressure.

Some patients have a difficult time tolerating the side effects of or are not responding to medications and require another treatment option. These side effects can include: weakness, fatigue, pain, insomnia, rash, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, fever, headaches, diarrhea and heartburn.

The kidneys and renal nerves play a major role in blood pressure regulation. The renal nerves communicate information from the kidney to the brain and vice versa. In people with high blood pressure, the renal nerves are hyperactive and cause blood pressure to rise and possibly damage the heart, kidney, and blood vessels.

CLINICAL STUDY'S PURPOSE

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is part of a clinical study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of renal denervation with the investigational Symplicity Renal Denervation System in patients with treatment resistant hypertension and systolic blood pressure higher than 160mmHG.

A catheter is inserted in the renal arteries, delivering lowpower radiofrequency energy that quiets hyperactive nerves that line the wall of the arteries leading to the kidneys.

ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY

Patients who wish to participate in the study:
• Must be age 18 – 80
• Must have systolic blood pressure of 160mmHG or higher
• Must be taking three blood pressure medications, one of which is a diurectic
• Must be willing to do the required testing and follow-up visits.
