THE FACTS ABOUT Oncology Clinical Trials
Background
Clinical trials are an important part of cancer research. One of the final steps in the long process of oncology research, clinical trials are research studies in which individuals join with physicians to find new, more effective ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. Without these studies, new therapies and drugs could not be approved.

Cancer research addresses a number of areas, including: new techniques for screening, diagnosing, and staging cancer; new anti-cancer drugs; new methods of surgery; new approaches to radiation therapy; and new technologies.
“Our cancer research provides clinical trials in a community setting and eliminates the need for patients to travel long distances to major cancer centers,” says Judie Goodman, DO and SJMO oncologist. “Additionally, we offer individuals the unique opportunity to take part in a treatment or new therapy that might not otherwise be available.”
There are four types of clinical trials used in cancer research, including:
Prevention trials are designed to prevent cancer from developing in individuals without cancer – or to prevent a new type of cancer from developing in those with cancer.
Early Detection Trials are designed to detect cancer, especially in its early stages.
Treatment trials are designed to test new therapies in cancer patients.
Quality of Life Studies are designed to improve the overall quality of life for cancer patients.
