To address these challenges and provide the best possible care to oncology patients, hospitals are turning to weekly case review committees – also called multi-disciplinary tumor boards – which bring together the expertise and unique perspective of a group of practitioners from a variety of disciplines to evaluate individual patient cases and determine the most effective course of action.

Made up of specialists from radiology, pulmonology, medicaloncology, radiation oncology, hematology, surgery, pain management, and other disciplines – tumor boards evaluate every aspect of a patient’s medical history, clinical findings, diagnostic studies, therapy modalities, and research data – to make treatment recommendations which are submitted to each physician involved in the patient’s care.

“Tumor conferences create an environment for physicians to share knowledge regarding the latest surgical procedures, chemotherapy treatments, new clinical trials, and radiation therapy,” says Alaa Owainati, MD and SJMO oncologist. “This unique model of care provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”

ADVANTAGES
Although cancer patients have a primary oncologist who supervises their care, the most optimal treatment plans are produced from the combined expertise of many medical experts. Ultimately, tumor conferences increase the quality and effectiveness of treatment – and the promise for cure.

“The goal of the tumor conference is to provide the most beneficial options and recommendations for treatment of patients,” says Alaa Owainati, MD. “Tumor boards make it possible for physicians from a variety of disciplines to learn from each other. As a result, both patient and physician gain from the sharing of this information.”
