THE FACTS ABOUT THE FACTS ABOUT ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY

Background

The ankle remains the most commonly injured joint with a national average of approximately 27,000 new ankle sprains occurring everyday. Most ankle sprains can be resolved through appropriate nonsurgical
care, but for persistent ankle pain several symptoms may become indicators that you’re a candidate for ankle arthroscopy. These indicators include: chronic pain associated with the tendon, cartilage or other occult joint injuries. Such injuries may need to be surgically repaired if a traumatic event caused the tear and symptoms fail to improve after trying conservative treatment measures. Today, surgeons are turning to ar throscopic surgery to repair ankle ailments. An ar throscope is a small, soft tube with a light and lenses on the tip.

Surgeries completed ar throscopically are done through small openings with the scope connected to a video monitor to view the inside of the ankle. This new optical and digital technology has enabled ankle arthroscopy to serve as an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool for patients requiring surgery. “Employing the use of a small circular lens through three or fewer small incisions creates ankle joint accessibility in virtually any region,” explains SJMO Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Christopher Tisdel. Additionally, ankle arthroscopy may be necessary if you have debris in your ankle from torn cartilage or from a bone chip. Also, if there is ligament damage from a severely sprained ankle, arthroscopy may be used to evaluate the extent of damage and possibly to repair it.

ADVANTAGES
Choosing to utilize ankle arthroscopy in operative situations has several advantages. Arthroscopic evaluation and treatment only requires several small incisions thus limiting the degree of scaring and trauma associated with surgery. It also inspects the joint environment much more precisely, enabling an accurate removal of damaged or scarred joint tissue. Additionally, ankle arthroscopy has also reduced postoperative pain and healing times in comparison to traditional open joint techniques.

CAUTIONS
There are risks associated with any surgery. In rare circumstances this procedure may cause bleeding, infection, or injury to another part of the ankle. There is also the chance that a problem in a vein
could cause a blood clot to form.
