“The better prepared the mother is at the time of conception, the easier it will be for her body to adapt to the demands of pregnancy,” says Arlene Marcy, MD and SJMO OB/GYN. Doctors recommend that women address all health concerns, no matter how minor they may be. The following steps are helpful in preparing for and maintaining a healthy pregnancy:

Physical Exam:
A complete gynecological exam is recommended for all women considering pregnancy. Additionally, it is important to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases and to make sure all immunizations are up-to-date.

Dental Exam:
A comprehensive dental exam and cleaning is suggested prior to becoming pregnant, including x-rays, procedures, and any necessary fillings.

Balanced Diet:
A well-balanced diet, including vitamin, mineral, and folic acid supplements is critical throughout pregnancy.

Exercise:
Exercises and strength building activities are important before, during, and after pregnancy. Being fit increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy and reduces the risk of developing backaches and varicose veins. Women should limit their exposure to potential hazards, such as chemical fumes. Also, doctors recommend that women reduce their intake of caffeine and alcohol. Most importantly, women should quit smoking.
